Field Trips

At Da Dream Lab, we offer an inspiring environment filled with creative and educational activities for audiences of all ages. Our field trips provide a unique opportunity for students to engage in hands-on art and science projects, fostering a love for learning and exploration. Starting at only $10-15 per child, our field trips can be tailored to fit your students needs—whether you prefer a mobile experience at your school, a visit to Da Dream Lab, or an in-school program. Grants and other programs may be used to pay for field trips, and we are also willing to work within a school’s budget. Bus transportation can be through: Roberts Hawaii

Sample Lessons

These Are all lessons based off of Hawaii DOE grade level standards. We do not need to pull all of them. Field trips can be changed, and altered. They can be art. Science, or both. We can make almost anything a fun lesson. AT DDL times can be altered for field trips, though we recommend arrival by 10:00 am.

Kindergarten

Art Lesson: Color Exploration with Crayons

Objective: Students will learn about primary and secondary colors by mixing colors with crayons.

Activity: Provide students with red, blue, and yellow crayons. Have them draw different shapes and mix the colors to create green, orange, and purple.

Standards: Visual Arts Standard K.VA.1.3 - Use a variety of art-making tools and materials.

Science Lesson: Exploring the Five Senses

Objective: Students will identify and describe the five senses.
Activity: Set up stations with items to smell (flowers), taste (safe snacks), touch (various textures), see (colorful pictures), and hear (different sounds). Have students rotate and describe their experiences.

Standards: Science Standard K.PS4.1 - Plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make sound and that sound can make materials vibrate.

1st Grade

Art Lesson: Shape Collage

Objective: Students will create a collage using different shapes and colors.

Activity: Provide various shapes cut from colored paper. Have students arrange and glue the shapes onto a larger paper to create a picture or abstract design.

Standards: Visual Arts Standard 1.VA.1.3 - Use shapes and forms to create artwork.

1st grade science experiment: Weather Observation

Science Lesson: Weather Observation

Objective: Students will observe and record different weather conditions.

Activity: Over a week, have students observe and draw the weather each day. Discuss different weather patterns and how they affect our daily lives.

Standards: Science Standard 1.ESS1.2 - Make observations at different times of year to relate the amount of daylight to the time of year.

2nd Grade

Art Lesson: Drawing from Nature

Objective: Students will create drawings based on natural objects.

Activity: Take students on a nature walk to collect leaves, flowers, and rocks. Back in the classroom, have them use these items as inspiration for detailed drawings.

Standards: Visual Arts Standard 2.VA.1.3 - Observe and draw objects from nature.

Science Lesson: Plant Life Cycles

Objective: Students will learn about the life cycle of plants.

Activity: Plant seeds in cups and observe their growth over several weeks. Have students draw and label each stage of the plant’s life cycle.

Standards: Science Standard 2.LS2.1 - Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow.

3rd Grade

Art Lesson: Community Mural

Objective: Students will collaborate to create a mural representing their community.

Activity: Discuss important aspects of the local community. Have students work in groups to design and paint sections of a mural that depicts these aspects.

Standards: Visual Arts Standard 3.VA.2.1 - Collaborate to create a public artwork that reflects community.

Science Lesson: Simple Machines

Objective: Students will explore different types of simple machines and their uses.

Activity: Set up stations with simple machines (lever, pulley, wheel and axle). Have students experiment with each machine and describe how it makes work easier.

Standards: Science Standard 3.PS2.4 - Define a simple design problem that can be solved by applying scientific ideas about magnets.

4th Grade

Art Lesson: Hawaiian Petroglyphs

Objective: Students will learn about and create their own petroglyphs inspired by Hawaiian culture.

Activity: Study examples of traditional Hawaiian petroglyphs. Provide students with clay or foam sheets to carve their own petroglyphs representing something meaningful to them.

Standards: Visual Arts Standard 4.VA.1.2 - Use symbols to create a work of art based on an idea or theme.

Science Lesson: Ecosystem Exploration

Objective: Students will study the components and interactions within ecosystems.

Activity: Create a terrarium in a clear container with soil, plants, and small animals (like insects). Observe and record how the components interact over time.

Standards: Science Standard 4.LS1.1 - Construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction.

5th Grade

Art Lesson: Perspective Drawing

Objective: Students will learn the basics of one-point perspective drawing.

Activity: Teach students about the horizon line and vanishing point. Have them draw a simple scene (like a street with buildings) using one-point perspective techniques.

Standards: Visual Arts Standard 5.VA.1.3 - Apply one-point perspective to create the illusion of space.

Science Lesson: Solar System Model

Objective: Students will understand the scale and composition of the solar system.

Activity: Have students create a scale model of the solar system using various materials to represent planets. Discuss the relative sizes and distances of the planets from the sun.
Standards: Science Standard 5.ESS1.2 - Represent data in graphical displays to reveal patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky.

6th Grade

Art Lesson: Printmaking

Objective: Students will create original prints using various printmaking techniques.

Activity: Introduce students to basic printmaking methods like stamping and relief printing. Have them design and carve their own stamps to create prints on paper.

Standards: Visual Arts Standard 6.VA.1.3 - Use printmaking techniques to create an artwork.

Science Lesson: Earth’s Layers

Objective: Students will learn about the structure of the Earth’s layers.

Activity: Create a 3D model of the Earth using clay to represent the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core. Have students label each layer and describe its characteristics.

Standards: Science Standard 6.ESS2.3 - Analyze and interpret data on the distribution of fossils and rocks, continental shapes, and seafloor structures to provide evidence of the past plate motions.

7th Grade

Art Lesson: Self-Portrait with Mixed Media

Objective: Students will create a self-portrait using various mixed media techniques.

Activity: Provide materials like paints, pastels, and collage papers. Have students create self-portraits that incorporate different textures and materials to express their personalities.

Standards: Visual Arts Standard 7.VA.1.3 - Use mixed media to create an artwork that expresses individual ideas and emotions.

Science Lesson: Photosynthesis Investigation

Objective: Students will understand the process of photosynthesis and its importance to plant life.

Activity: Conduct an experiment where students observe how plants grow under different light conditions. Have them measure growth, record observations, and explain the role of photosynthesis.

Standards: Science Standard 7.LS1.6 - Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for the role of photosynthesis in the cycling of matter and flow of energy into and out of organisms.

8th Grade

Art Lesson: Abstract Expressionism

Objective: Students will explore abstract expressionism and create an abstract painting.

Activity: Study works by abstract expressionist artists. Provide students with large canvases and paints, encouraging them to express emotions and ideas through abstract forms and colors.

Standards: Visual Arts Standard 8.VA.1.3 - Create an abstract artwork that communicates personal ideas and emotions.

Science Lesson: Chemical Reactions

Objective: Students will investigate different types of chemical reactions and their properties.

Activity: Perform experiments with various chemical reactions (such as vinegar and baking soda). Have students observe and record the reactions, identifying evidence of chemical changes.

Standards: Science Standard 8.PS1.2 - Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred.
